What Size Tablecloth Do I Need? A Guide for Round and Rectangular Tables

By HOLVERNE

A tablecloth size describes the fabric, not the table it fits. A 60-inch round tablecloth, for example, will hang very differently on a 40-inch table and a 48-inch table. The difference is the drop: the fabric that hangs over the edge.

To find a useful starting size, measure your tabletop and add twice your preferred drop. For a rectangular table, do this for both the length and the width. For a round table, use the diameter.

1. Measure the table as you will use it

Put any extension leaves in place before measuring. Measure the flat tabletop from edge to edge, leaving the table legs out of the calculation.

  • Rectangular table: record the width and length.
  • Round table: measure straight across the centre at the widest point. This is the diameter.
  • Square table: measure both sides, even if they look equal.
  • Oval table: record the maximum width and length, then check the cloth's shape as well as its dimensions. A rectangular cloth on an oval table will not hang evenly all the way around.

Use one unit throughout your calculation. If the product size is in inches and your tape measure uses centimetres, 1 inch = 2.54 cm. Convert the measurements before comparing them.

2. Choose a drop you can sit with comfortably

For a seated meal at home, a drop of 8–10 inches, or about 20–25 cm, is a useful starting point. It is a styling preference, not a rule. A shorter drop shows more of the table base; a longer one creates a fuller outline and may reach your lap.

Try the length before ordering. Drape a sheet or another cloth over the table and measure how far it hangs. Pull out a chair, sit down, and check the space around your knees and any chair arms. On a rectangular table, the corners hang lower than the middle of each edge, so check those too.

A floor-length cloth needs a separate measurement from tabletop to floor. Do not assume a standard table height or choose a floor-length size from the number of seats.

A 40 by 60 inch tabletop needs a calculated 60 by 80 inch cloth for a 10 inch drop on each side.

3. Calculate the cloth dimensions

Rectangular and square tables

Cloth width = table width + (2 × desired drop)

Cloth length = table length + (2 × desired drop)

For a table measuring 40 × 60 inches, adding a 10-inch drop gives an ideal cloth size of 60 × 80 inches. That is the calculated size; it does not mean that every design is sold in those dimensions.

If you choose a 60 × 86-inch cloth instead, the drop becomes 10 inches on each long side and 13 inches at each end. Decide whether those longer ends work with your chairs and table position before buying.

Round tables

Cloth diameter = table diameter + (2 × desired drop)

A 44-inch round table with an 8-inch drop needs a 60-inch round cloth. In metric measurements, that is approximately a 111.8 cm table, a 20.3 cm drop, and a 152.4 cm cloth.

The same 60-inch cloth on a 48-inch round table gives a 6-inch drop. On a 60-inch round table, it reaches the edge with no planned drop.

4. Compare the size with your actual table

These examples use four tablecloth sizes listed in the HOLVERNE designs linked below. They are examples of fit, not a complete catalogue or a seating-capacity chart. A different table measurement produces a different drop.

Four examples of tablecloth fit
Your tabletop Cloth dimensions Resulting drop when centred
Round, 44 in diameter / 111.8 cm Round, 60 in diameter / 152.4 cm 8 in / 20.3 cm all around
Rectangle, 36 × 54 in / 91.4 × 137.2 cm 55 × 70 in / 139.7 × 177.8 cm 9.5 in / 24.1 cm on each long side; 8 in / 20.3 cm at each end
Rectangle, 36 × 66 in / 91.4 × 167.6 cm 60 × 86 in / 152.4 × 218.4 cm 12 in / 30.5 cm on each long side; 10 in / 25.4 cm at each end
Rectangle, 40 × 100 in / 101.6 × 254 cm 60 × 120 in / 152.4 × 304.8 cm 10 in / 25.4 cm on each long side and at each end

Centimetre measurements are rounded to one decimal place. Width is listed first for rectangular tables and cloths.

To check any ready-made size, reverse the calculation:

Drop on each side = (cloth width − table width) ÷ 2

Drop at each end = (cloth length − table length) ÷ 2

If either result is negative, the cloth will not cover that tabletop dimension. If the result is zero, it will reach the edge without a planned overhang.

5. Choose the fabric separately from the size

The linked HOLVERNE designs offer tablecloth options in Peach Skin, 120 gsm; Oxford Fabric, 170 gsm; and Canvas, 280 gsm. All three are 100% polyester. These names describe the fabric construction or texture; Canvas does not mean cotton, and Oxford does not mean linen.

Peach Skin is the lighter, smoother option. Oxford has more structure. Canvas is heavier and more textured. The same dimensions can look different in a lighter or more substantial fabric, so use the photographs for your selected item and shape as a reference.

The gsm number describes fabric weight per square metre, not the total weight of your finished tablecloth. Follow the care instructions supplied with your particular item.

Before you place your order

Confirm the item type as well as the dimensions. Some listings include placemats and runners alongside tablecloths, so the lowest displayed price may belong to a smaller item. Tableware and decorative props are not included with a tablecloth.

Check the current size-and-fabric selection for availability. If your measurements call for a custom size, contact HOLVERNE to confirm the dimensions, fabric, price and processing time before ordering.
